Czech Days
In Tabor, SD just a few minutes west of Yankton, you’ll find the annual Czech Days celebrated each year in June. To locals and visitors alike, the two words “Czech Days” are synonymous with fun, music, entertainment, dancing, and traditional Czech foods.
Czech Days, held mid June for a weekend, celebrates the heritage of the early founders of the little South Dakota community who came to Tabor from Czechoslovakia as early as 1869. The small town of 417 people has attracted as many as 10,000 people to Czech Days! What’s to eat when you visit Tabor for this event?
Thousands of dozens of the tasty Czech pastry, the kolace, are consumed by visitors! Highlights of the event includes a parade, crowning of the royalty, and the traditional Czech dance, "Beseda," performed by 200 dancers, young and old alike, dressed in their colorful Czech costumes.
There is plenty of toe tapping polka music being played throughout the celebration. The pubs usually hire a special band to provide "live music" for their customers during the celebration. There are public dances--with a polka band included on the program for each evening. Use this website for more information: www.byelectric.com/~tabor/
