Schmeckfest
Translated from German, it literally means “A Festival of Tasting.” And tasting is what you’ll do when you attend this annual event held at Freeman Academy, Freeman, SD a short 30 minute drive north of Yankton.
Schmeckfest is a celebration of the foods, traditions and crafts of the Germans from Russia Mennonites who settled this area in the 1870s. The celebration is held two weekends (Friday and Saturday) at the end of March or April and features a full 3-course traditional German meal served family style; the full menu begins with noodle soup and ends with kuchen and a variety of desserts.
In the middle you'll find stewed beef, sauerkraut, bratwurst, fried potatoes, and lettuce salad. A highlight of the event includes a full-stage musical theater production performed by very talented local people; displays and heritage collections are also found in a variety of buildings.
Go to their website: www.schmeckfest.com for more detailed information and to reserve your tickets for the play or the meal.
