The Dakota Territorial Museum is a collection of items, painstakingly cared for, that tell the story of Yankton’s history. The museum holds rare memorabilia of early life in the Dakota Territory. Some of the exhibits include the musical instruments of Felix Vinaterri, who played in General George Custer’s band; there is also a large collection of fishing tackle and equipment.
The grand history of Yankton as a thriving river town is explained through photographs and artwork, as well as incredibly detailed models of steamboats. Step outside to visit an old railroad depot, caboose, and a one-room country school on its grounds.
There is always a helpful museum moderator who is willing to give you a thorough walk through the museum. The Dakota Territorial Museum is located at 610 Summit Street, next to Westside Park, across from the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital.
It is open Memorial Day through Labor Day, 10am – 5pm Tuesday to Saturday; 12 – 4pm Sundays. During the off season, the museum is open in the afternoons from 1 – 5pm Tuesday through Friday and 12 – 4pm on Saturday. For more information on the museum, call (605) 665-3898. Admission is free.
