The Gavins Point Fish Hatchery is one of 65 national Federal Hatcheries and Fish Technology Centers operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife. In existence since 1960 on the Missouri River, the hatchery the hatchery raises 12 to 16 species of sport fish, and has produced over 5 billion fish for release in midwestern waters.
Gavins Point NFH raises the endangered pallid sturgeon and the paddlefish, which is a "species of concern" in many states. The fish are spawned here and later released to increase or maintain fish populations in the wild. Come here to enjoy the exhibits and displays in the aquarium building, explaining the work and objectives of this hatchery.
You’ll see 50 native and introduced species in 13 large tanks and several smaller tanks. Take a short walk behind the building to see outside ponds full of fish currently being raised. You even have the opportunity to buy handfuls of food from the nearby vending machine to feed the hungry fish.
They are always anxious for another meal! Some areas such as the Endangered Species and Sturgeon buildings are off limits to the public except through guided tours. The Hatchery and Aquarium is open April 1 to October 31. For more information, call (605) 665-3352.
