Located in Riverside Park, the Dakota Territorial Capitol Replica is a symbol of Yankton serving as the first capitol of Dakota Territory from 1861 until the legislature decided to move the capitol to Bismarck in 1883. The replica is patterned after the original Dakota Territorial Capitol built in Yankton in 1862 and torn down in 1886.
Displays in the capitol replica include photographs of old Yankton, maps of the Dakota Territory, a gallery of former Dakota Territorial governors and a tribute to the local St. John's Masonic Lodge. When you visit, you will want to take note of the quilt showing Yankton landmarks, made by the four Yankton Quester chapters, a group dedicated to historical preservation.
Riverside Park is appropriately located on the south edge of town, along the Missouri River. The Capitol Replica is on the western edge of the park.
